Data Management & Communications

Gryphon Scientific has collected data using approaches that range from population surveys to advanced machine learning. Our data management skills include curating scientific data, merging diverse datasets, and developing data standards and approaches to data governance. Through outreach and engagement with scientific and technical communities, we facilitate the collection, curation, standardization, analyses, and dissemination of technical and scientific data, ensuring best practices to enable the findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability of data and information assets.

SCIENTIFIC DATA MANAGEMENT

Gryphon Scientific has collected data using approaches that range from population surveys to advanced machine learning. Our data management skills include curating scientific data, merging diverse datasets, and developing data standards and approaches to data governance. 01

Curating a Database for Drug Discovery

In a large data management project for National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Gryphon Scientific manages CHEMDB, a chemical and biological database that aids the discovery of potential therapies for AIDS, tuberculosis, and other opportunistic infections. This database holds information curated by Gryphon Scientific staff on over 395,000 unique chemical entities with either public information on biological activity against HIV and opportunistic infections associated with AIDS or proprietary data from NIAID screening laboratories. The Gryphon Scientific team also maintains the website where the domestic and international research community can access the public data.
02

Supporting Data Sharing Initiatives for Improved Influenza Vaccines

The NIAID-funded Collaborative Influenza Vaccine Innovation Centers (CIVICs) are a highly collaborative and integrated network of basic and applied research teams developing longer-lasting and more broadly protective influenza vaccines. For the Statistical, Data Management, and Coordination Center (SDMCC), Gryphon Scientific develops structured data standards for basic, exploratory, and preclinical data, designs technical systems, operationalizes data management and coordination activities, and performs quality assurance on data submissions. We enable the program’s data sharing goals to make available high-quality and impactful immunological data about influenza infection and vaccination.
03

Developing an Animal Population Database

For a DTRA surveillance system, Gryphon Scientific created a MySQL database based on restructured and augmented data from the USDA Census of Agriculture. Data were ingested and integrated with an automated Java pipeline; missing data and seasonal animal populations were estimated by applying advanced analytic techniques. The resulting database contained 15 million lines of population data on 25 species and 3000 lines on farm biosecurity and production practices. We used these data to probe the relationship between animal population density and human disease.

SCIENCE COMMUNICATIONS

Gryphon Scientific conducts science communications using our team’s rigorous scientific and technical training to translate complex, multi-dimensional data and information to diverse audiences. The practice area executes effective outreach and communications programs through science writing, website content, social media, and meeting coordination. We create engaging infographics, data visualizations, and training packages, as well as design data reporting and analytics tools, dashboards, and applications, which make critical information accessible for analyses and implementation of program goals.

01

Managing a Data Processing Center for Influenza Research

The Centers for Excellence in Influenza Research and Response (CEIRR) is a NIAID-funded network of academic laboratories that bring together multi-disciplinary teams of influenza researchers. For the CEIRR Influenza Data Processing and Communications Center (iDPCC), Gryphon Scientific conducts scientific literature surveillance and enables outreach and communication by publishing web content, newsletters, and social media highlighting network efforts and activities. We also develop interactive data dashboards, reports, and interfaces used to access network resources, which support data quality assurance, data sharing, and coordination.
02

Engaging experts to address the threat of anti-microbial resistance

Gryphon Scientific supports the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (PACCARB) through working group management, design and moderation of public meetings, and writing services. The PACCARB engages researchers, policymakers, and practitioners through technical working groups to prepare recommendations and reports on how to combat antimicrobial resistance through antimicrobial stewardship, One Health, and other approaches. Through all of the support provided to the PACCARB, Gryphon Scientific leverages staff subject matter expertise and writing, communication, and organizational skills to provide exemplary products and service.
03

Coordinating to strengthen international disease detection and laboratory networks

The Infectious Disease Detection and Surveillance (IDDS) program, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, strengthens laboratory networks across the globe via stakeholder engagement and coordination. Gryphon Scientific staff coordinate working group meetings and engage laboratory stakeholders to build capacity in diagnostics, laboratory services, and coordination, as well as design of interactive data analytics and visualization tools to enable early detection of and rapid response to outbreaks.
